Breathalyzer Results
It doesn't take much to get a reliable breathalyzer result when using a digital alcohol breath tester. In fact most devices come with instructions printed right on the unit itself. With most devices, you will be required to give a long steady breath until you hear an electronic beeping sound or a pop from within the device. Many of the smaller pocket size devices and some of the larger more sophisticated unites can operate on a quick breath as well. For many models that require the clear plastic tubes, you don't necessarily always have to replace the tubes between uses. The replacement requirement is mostly for sanitary reasons, so it is advisable to replace or at least thoroughly clean the tubes. Either way, having a fresh plastic tube for every reading has nothing to do with the results of the breath test.
There are many situations in which it would be very beneficial to get a good breathalyzer result. Many medications interact negatively or may outright damage your internal organs if taken while consuming alcoholic beverages or substances that may contain trace amounts of alcohol. For instance, many sexual performance enhancers, various pain reducing medications, or medications for depression or anxiety have strict warnings against taking these meds if you have recently consumed alcohol. Using a digital alcohol breath tester, you can be certain whether or not you have alcohol in your system and know when it is safe to begin taking your regular medications.
To get good breathalyzer results, you generally have to wait at least fifteen minutes after consuming alcohol to give your digital alcohol breath tester a try. If you are using your device to get several readings over a short period of time, realize that many of the less expensive models are not necessarily meant for this type of use. If you have an alcohol breath tester and you use it frequently, then you face having to recalibrate the machine more often. In order to get good breathalyzer results, every alcometer needs to be periodically recalibrated. In most cases this involves sending the machine by mail to the manufacturer and paying a small fee. Keeping this in mind, you may want to use your device at those times when you really need it instead of every time you take a drink or when you need a conversation starter at a party.
It's fairly easy to tell when someone is impaired, especially when you are sober and the other person has had a few drinks. In these cases using a breathalyzer may not even be necessary, but there are other instances in which it may be absolutely necessary to get a good breathalyzer result. If you are a parent and you suspect your child of drinking, a good reading on a digital alcohol breath tester is a must regardless of whether or not you can visually tell they've been drinking. Or say you have a friend that came over, had a few drinks, and they've been sleeping it off on the couch for the past few hours. Chances are they'll not show signs of impairment when they wake up, but you want a good breathalyzer result so you'll both know it's okay for your friend to be behind the wheel - for legal reasons as well as for the sake of safety.
Just because you or someone else "feels" fine or you are not showing signs of impairment doesn't mean you will hit a low BAC on the breathalyzer results. In fact, for DUI cases police have two options with which they can charge you. If you're BAC is above the legal limit according to the breathalyzer, then you can be certain you are going to jail on DUI charges. If you display symptoms of impairment regardless of the breathalyzer result, you will go to jail on DUI charges based on your level of impairment. In both of these cases its up to you and your defense attorney to show that despite what the officer witnessed, you were in fact okay to be operating a motor vehicle. If you have your own breathalyzer machine on hand ahead of time, you can avoid getting behind the wheel in the first place, or in a worst-case scenario you may have some evidence to show you were okay to drive in the unfortunate case in which you get arrested. The point here is that checking your BAC on your own can help you avoid more headaches than the one you might get with a morning hangover.
